Reinhold Glière: Concerto for Horn
The season concludes with a program that highlights both a remarkable guest artist and the collective voice of the orchestra, led by Daniel Raiskin.
The spotlight shifts to the ensemble with a “Musicians’ Choice” work selected by WSO players. We’re keeping this choice under wraps for now, but listeners can expect a piece where each section steps forward in turn. Playful duos, mysterious night music, a sly musical joke, and a thrilling, high‑energy finish. Framing the end of the season, this work places the orchestra itself at the heart of the experience.
Renowned horn player Radek Baborák joins for Reinhold Glière’s Horn Concerto in B‑flat major. Written for the principal horn of the Bolshoi Theatre, this favourite is full of character: a confident, march‑like first movement, a gentle Romance shaped by folk song, and a festive, dancing finale that gradually gathers speed. It’s a rare chance to hear the horn singing on its own at centre stage.
