Robert Schumann: Symphony No.3
An evening of vibrant contrasts brings together expressive piano, new sounds, and the warmth of the Romantic orchestra, led by Ryusuke Numajiri.
Québécoise pianist Élisabeth Pion, winner of the 2025 Honens International Piano Competition, takes the stage for Franz Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Played in one continuous sweep, this concerto moves effortlessly from quiet, songful moments to big, showstopping passages, constantly reshaping its main theme in new and surprising ways.
The program opens with Banitza Groove by Japanese composer Dai Fujikura, a brief burst of colour and rhythm built on a lively Bulgarian dance pattern. A bright, off‑kilter introduction that sets a festive tone for the night.
Finally, Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, “Rhenish” paints scenes from life along the Rhine. From its joyful, open air first movement to a majestic, cathedral inspired fourth movement and sunlit finale. The result is a dynamic, inviting concert that feels fresh yet warmly familiar.
