Hector Berlioz: Les nuits d’été (Summer Nights)
Franz Schubert: Symphony No.4 in C minor (Tragic)
A program of lyric beauty and dramatic contrast, led by Hossein Pishkar.
Winnipeg-born soprano Andriana Chuchman takes her home stage for Hector Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été (Summer Nights), six songs for voice and orchestra based on poems by Théophile Gautier. Together they trace a journey from the excitement of new love through loss and memory to the hope of new horizons. The music is gentle, colourful, and atmospheric. An ideal showcase for Chuchman’s expressive voice.
Afterward comes Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 4 in C minor, “Tragic,” written when he was just 19. The nickname sounds heavy, but this is really a dramatic, energetic symphony that mixes tension with Schubert’s gift for flowing, song-like melody, moving from darker moments toward a brighter close.
The result is an evening that feels both intimate and grand, a chance to welcome home a celebrated Winnipeg artist and hear the orchestra shine.
