Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5
The season opens with a powerful program that puts the orchestra front and centre, featuring two of the most recognizable symphonies in classical music. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 begins with one of the most iconic motifs ever written, building into a dramatic and triumphant journey. It is paired with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a deeply expressive work filled with memorable melodies and powerful emotion.
Under the direction of Music Director Daniel Raiskin, the concert also includes Kelly-Marie Murphy’s Dark Nights, Bright Stars, Vast Universe, a vivid and engaging work by the WSO’s incoming composer-in-residence. Inspired by the night sky, the piece explores curiosity, determination, and discovery, drawing listeners into a world of shifting colours and energy.
Bringing together a contemporary Canadian work and two audience favourites, this concert spotlights the energy, sound, and spirit of the orchestra. An exciting way to begin the season.
