Join us for Copland and Liszt UnTuxed, a performance that brings together the bold and the sublime. The performance kicks off with Aaron Copland’s Orchestral Variations, a vibrant and dynamic piece that showcases Copland’s mastery of orchestral color. The variations shift from hymn-like serenity to majestic grandeur, all punctuated by a rich array of percussion, creating an ever-changing musical landscape.

The program then transitions to the romantic and dramatic world of Franz Liszt with his symphonic poem Les Préludes. This piece is an orchestral tour de force, capturing the essence of life’s trials and triumphs through its sweeping melodies and dramatic shifts. Conducted by the dynamic Tania Miller, this performance promises to be both stirring and memorable.

Fun Fact: Liszt’s Les Préludes is considered one of the earliest examples of a symphonic poem, a form that Liszt himself helped to pioneer. Copland’s Orchestral Variations was initially conceived as a solo piano piece, showcasing his versatility and innovative approach to composition.

During this bite-sized performance, you’ll learn about the work being performed, enjoy a taste of orchestral music, and have your curiosity quenched when the conductor answers questions from the audience.

• The conductor introduces the work from the stage at about 11:45 am.
• Can’t make it for 11:45 am? Come for the performance at 12:15 pm.
• Stay after the performance for a post-performance Q&A with the conductor at 1:00 pm.
• You are welcome to come and go quietly during UnTuxed performances if you need to.
