CONCERT PROGRAM

Igor Stravinsky: Suite from Pulcinella
Dmitri Shostakovich: Piano Concerto No. 2
Leokadiya Kashperova: Symphony in B Minor

Discover the delightful connections between Igor Stravinsky and his piano teacher, Leokadiya Kashperova, in a concert that combines Neoclassical charm, Soviet wit, and Romantic splendor.

Join us for an evening brimming with wit, charm, and rediscovery. This concert opens with Igor Stravinsky’s Suite from Pulcinella, a delightful homage to the Baroque era through the lens of 20th-century Neoclassicism. Pulcinella, a mischievous character from the commedia dell’arte, comes to life in Stravinsky’s vibrant, humorous score.

Making her WSO debut, acclaimed Armenian-born pianist, Marianna Shirinyan, performs Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Written as a 19th birthday gift for the composer’s son, Maxim, this concerto is a joyful, playful work, filled with sunny melodies and whimsical passages. The second movement is a heart-melting, romantic gem – considered one of Shostakovich’s most beautiful pieces.

One of Europe’s most sought-after musicians, Shirinyan is renowned for her vibrant and virtuosic musicianship in solo and chamber performances. With a wide-ranging repertoire, she captivates audiences with her sensitivity, technical brilliance, and joy for music.

The evening culminates with a true musical treasure: the Symphony in B Minor by Leokadiya Kashperova. Kashperova, the first piano teacher of Stravinsky, was a remarkable composer in her own right. Her symphony, full of rich Romanticism and vibrant colors, is a thrilling rediscovery, offering a fresh and captivating listening experience.

Fun Fact: Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2’s final movement is often compared to the playful exercises assigned by piano teachers – only much more fun to listen to!
