Get ready for a thrilling start to the 2024/25 season with Manitoba’s own, Brandon-born James Ehnes!
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) proudly opens its 2024/25 season with an exceptional evening featuring internationally acclaimed violinist and violist, James Ehnes. Hailing from Brandon, Manitoba, Ehnes returns to the WSO stage to perform not one, but two masterworks, showcasing his versatility on both violin AND viola.
The night begins with Elfrida Andrée’s delightful Concert Overture in D major. Andrée, a pioneering Swedish composer, was one of Scandinavia’s first female organists. Her vibrant overture sets a lively tone for the evening, connecting seamlessly with the spirit of Johannes Brahms and Hector Berlioz.
Next, Ehnes takes the spotlight with Brahms’ Violin Concerto. Despite its initial mixed reviews, the concerto has become a cornerstone of the violin repertoire, known for its technical demands and emotional depth. Brahms’ concerto is one of the most beloved violin concertos of all time. Legend has it that the piece was so challenging that Henryk Wieniawski, regarded amongst the most distinguished violinists in history, deemed it unplayable! All this makes it an absolute treat to hear.
In a special treat, Ehnes then transitions to viola for Berlioz’s Harold in Italy, a piece inspired by English poet and peer Lord Byron’s poetic wanderings. Did you know that acclaimed Italian virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini famously rejected this piece as he did not think it was virtuosic enough to show off his tremendous skills? However, he later recognized it as a masterpiece after being moved to tears when attending a performance by another soloist a few years later.
This concert promises a memorable evening of musical storytelling and virtuosic performance, celebrating James Ehnes’ unique artistry and the rich heritage of classical music.
Fun Fact: Berlioz’s Harold in Italy was inspired by his own travels in Italy and his admiration for Byron’s poetry. It’s like a musical travel diary filled with picturesque scenes and heartfelt reflections.
