WSO Launches Executive Director Search

  • News

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra announces that Angela Birdsell will not renew her contract as Executive Director, which ends in 2026. The organization is launching its search to engage a new executive leader with the intent to have the incumbent in place by the end of the calendar year 2025.

Ms. Birdsell will work with the Board of the WSO to ensure that the transition is smooth and that the organization remains on track to achieve its transformational plans.

“When I was engaged by the WSO, I was committed to ensure the long-term future of an organization which is close to my heart,” said Birdsell. “We have come through the eye of the needle post-pandemic, thanks to the gradual return of audiences, to the generous support of so many patrons, including governments, and the cooperation and steadfast support of musicians, administration and the Board. While we are not entirely out of the woods, we now see light through the trees with regards to the stability of our operations.”

The new Executive Director will lead the administration of the WSO in accordance with the orchestra’s five-year strategic plan – WSO Futures 2025-2029 – working closely with the Music Director, the administration and the Board of Directors to guide the WSO towards a new future in its own venue.

“The Board of Directors is extremely grateful for the leadership of Angela Birdsell through what has been an extremely challenging few years for the WSO,” said Board Chair Curt Vossen. “She has worked with the Board and stakeholders to map out a strategy that will ensure stability, resiliency, flexibility and artistic excellence for the orchestra in the long term. The incumbent will carry the strategic plan forward and work closely with the WSO team as we now advance the WSO’s exciting and ambitious plans.”

A WSO search committee has been established that includes Birdsell and will begin reviewing applications in early Fall. “This is a critically important next step in moving the WSO’s plans forward,” said Birdsell. “I have every intention to assist the WSO as we navigate this transition and to ensure that the organization is well-positioned to achieve its five-year strategic plan.”

The WSO Board has struck a committee to launch an international search that will begin reviewing candidate applications in early Fall. Information on the posting can be found here.
