The Christopher Riess Memorial Funds: Investing in the Future of Music Education
- News
Over the past season, our community has rallied around a major education initiative at the orchestra: two memorial funds created by Rick Riess and Jean Carter in honour of their son, Christopher Riess.
Together, The Christopher Riess Memorial Sistema Endowment Fund and The Christopher Riess Memorial Education Fund have raised $1,014,568.06 to support the orchestra’s education programs and Sistema Winnipeg.
Rick and Jean chose to create these funds because music was at the heart of Christopher’s life. He grew up playing instruments and found in music both joy and a source of strength. By focusing their philanthropy on music education, they have ensured that his connection to music will continue to open doors for young people across Manitoba.

The two funds work hand in hand. The Sistema Endowment Fund provides long‑term support for Sistema Winnipeg, our intensive after‑school program that offers instruments, daily instruction, and a safe, supportive environment at no cost to families. The Education Fund strengthens the WSO’s broader education and outreach programs in the concert hall and in schools, helping us reach students from the early grades through high school and connect them directly with professional musicians.
Music education does far more than teach notes and rhythms. It helps students build confidence, resilience, and focus, and gives them a healthy way to express themselves. Studies show that making music can be both healing and inspiring, supporting improved mental well‑being and a stronger sense of belonging.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to these funds. Your generosity is helping secure meaningful, ongoing access to music education for young Manitobans, and is giving students the chance to experience the healing, inspiring power of music in classrooms, community spaces, and concert halls across our province.
