Sistema Winnipeg has been hard at work the last little while, showcasing their hard work at performances throughout the city, and preparing for their upcoming winter concert in December!
Both Sistema sites – Elwick and King Edward Community School – celebrated the student’s achievements partway through the Sistema school-term by hosting their Family Nights. These casual performances are for the school communities and Sistema-families, sharing what the students have been working on recently and ending in a tasty potluck sharing food and getting to meet other students and adults in the program! The first Family Night of the year also sees the annual Instrument Graduation ceremony that all new students in Sistema Winnipeg transition through, moving from paper instruments to accoustic.
More recently, Sistema students that are in partnership community ensemble, Winnipeg Youth Orchestras, participated in their Fall Fantasia concert at the new Desautels Concert Hall at the University of Manitoba! We had 15 students participate in the concert, across two of the three available ensembles (one of which is conducted by Sistema Teaching Artist, Cathy JiYoung Lee!), after successfully auditioning and being accepted into the program. This is the highest number of participants the program has seen be invovlved in Winnipeg Youth Orchestras – Thank you to all the parents, guardians, and community volunteers that help support transportation to ensure Sistema Winnipeg students can participate from the opportunity!
Want more Sistema? Sistema Winnipeg’s upcoming Tannis M. Richardson Winter Concert is on Monday, December 16, 2024 at 6:30 PM at the Seven Oaks Performing Arts Centre connected to Garden City Collegiate (711 Jefferson Ave). In addition to the amazing performances by the Sistema kids, the WSO is being inducted into the Jerry Maslowsky Hall of Fame after being nominated by the Seven Oaks School Division for our education and outreach initiatives and for the Sistema Winnipeg program.
The concert is FREE, though donations are encouraged to help sustain Sistema Winnipeg and the important work the program is able to do in the school communities it serves. We hope to see you there!
