5 Reasons You Should Come to WNMF Even Though You're Scared

1. You don’t need to “get it” — you just need to be curious

WNMF is all about experiencing sound — sometimes surprising, sometimes beautiful, sometimes strange. And even if you don’t love every piece (you’re not supposed to!), new music has a way of leaving strong impressions. You might remember an unusual sound, a striking texture, or a moment that suddenly hits you emotionally. Often, the most unexpected experiences become the most memorable.

2. It sounds way more diverse than you might expect

New music isn’t one style. You might hear a delicate, atmospheric work that feels like floating in space, followed by something rhythmic and energizing featuring electric guitar. Within this broad term are countless subgenres to explore, and chances are high you’ll connect with at least one piece in a way you didn’t expect.

3. You get to see composers and performers up close

One of the most unique parts of WNMF is that the creators are often right there with you. Hear directly from composers about what inspired them or what they hope listeners might take away. It’s like attending a film screening where the filmmakers are in the room.

4. It’s an easy way to expand your comfort zone

Trying something unfamiliar can be exciting — especially when the stakes are low. You don’t need to commit to the entire festival; even attending one concert is a great way to dip your toe into something new. You might walk away with a new favourite composer, a moment that surprised you, or simply the satisfaction of stepping outside your usual routine.

Curious but cautious? The festival begins with LAUNCHPAD — a free concert featuring world premieres by emerging Canadian composers.

Each year, WNMF captivates audiences with fresh venues and imaginative concepts designed to reshape the concert experience. Taken at The Leaf.

5. Join a community of curious, open-minded listeners

WNMF audiences include artists, students, long-time orchestra fans, and people attending for the very first time. It’s a mix of folks who love exploring new ideas, and the shared “What did you think?” conversations afterward are half the fun.
