Submissions are being accepted for the 2023/2024 RBC Canadian Conductor Showcase on October 5 & 6, 2023

Conducting a professional orchestra is one of the great accomplishments of a conductor’s career. There are, however, few opportunities for Canadians in the early stages of their careers to engage with professional orchestras in a practical, hands-on environment. The symphony orchestra presents many challenges, including effectively balancing the orchestra’s many instruments and communicating clearly with the musicians and audience.

The RBC Canadian Conductor Showcase provides a unique professional training opportunity to four emerging Canadian conductors, who will be immersed in the orchestral world through mentorship with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra by music director Daniel Raiskin and the WSO artistic team.

This season WSO audiences will be treated to two past participants of this excellent program. Earl Lee will lead the orchestra on February 10, 2024, for our Saturday Classics concert Classical Romance: Beethoven & Mozart featuring soprano Sarah Dufresne. Audiences will also meet new WSO assistant conductor Monica Chen this upcoming season. She participated in the Canadian Conductors Showcase in 2022 when former assistant conductor Naomi Woo was one of the mentors.

This past season Jaelem Bhate (2019 finalist) and Dmitri Zrajevski (2021 finalist) were both invited back to conduct the WSO as part of our Winnipeg New Music Festival Composers Institute concert. One of this year’s finalists will be invited to conduct at the 2024 WNMF Composers Institute concert.
