VIRGINIA PARKER PRIZE presented to Naomi Woo, WSO assistant conductor by Caroline Lussier, Canada Council for the Arts

Naomi Woo is a prominent young Canadian conductor and pianist. The current Assistant Conductor and Community Ambassador of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Naomi is frequently in demand as a guest conductor. As an opera conductor and music director, Naomi is remarkable for her collaborative approach and natural command of storytelling and language. She is an artist with Tangram, an ensemble devoted to celebrating the vitality of Chinese cultures and creating new music by transnational Chinese creators.

Also passionate about education, Naomi is the Music Director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. She is the first-ever music director of Sistema Winnipeg, a programme that uses music as a tool for social change. Using music to imaginatively transform the world runs through all of her work, including her PhD thesis from the University of Cambridge.

Naomi holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge, where she was a Gates Cambridge Scholar. She has also studied mathematics, philosophy, and music at Yale College, the Yale School of Music, and Université de Montréal.

Angela is an educator with teaching experience in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China and here in Winnipeg. Her education, work, research, and volunteer experience have all centred around the idea of crossing borders in education, including cultural, curricular, linguistic, and national borders. In her work and personal life, she often acts as a bridge between Chinese and Canadian cultures.

James Page was trained at the Nanjing Arts Institute, a top music school in Jiangsu, China, where he studied Chinese bamboo flute and piano. James performed with his band and hosted events throughout China. He has also performed and lived in the United States, Japan, and Singapore.

In Winnipeg since 2013, James has performed at the Folklorama Chinese Pavilion and later functioned as the pavilion’s Coordinator and General Director. He was nominated for the RBC On the Rise Award and became a member of the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Conservatory of Music and Arts, Art Director and Stage Manager for Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts, Choral Director for the Winnipeg Han Feng Choir, and Choral Director for the Winnipeg Voice of Love Choir. James has worked for Winnipeg school divisions’ international student programs and now works at the International College of Manitoba.

James hosts and produces an annual Chinese singing competition and a series of Chinese pop music concerts and other events to build bridges between Chinese newcomers and the local Winnipeg community.

Dashan (aka Mark Rowswell) has been called “the most famous foreigner in China,” where he has worked as a media personality and cultural ambassador for over 30 years.

Born and raised in Canada, Rowswell began studying Chinese in the mid-1980s, first at the University of Toronto and later at Peking University. He became interested in xiangsheng , a revered form of traditional comedic dialogue, and was soon appearing on television.
Repeated performances to hundreds of millions of viewers turned “Dashan” into a household name across China. His career expanded from comedy to dramatic acting to hosting cultural, diplomatic, educational and commercial programs, and live events. Over time, Dashan came to be seen as an all-around cultural ambassador between China and the West and a symbol of finding common ground between cultures.

Dashan is the only non-Chinese performer to have appeared four times on the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, the largest annual television extravaganza in China, with an estimated audience of over a billion viewers.

In recent years, Dashan has returned to his comedic roots, combining traditional Chinese comedy with Western stand-up in a ground-breaking solo show, “Dashan Live.”

电视观众最早认识大山是在中央电视台1988年的元旦晚会上。当年这位加拿大留学生在北京大学攻读中国语言文学，一次偶然的机会上电视表演小品《夜归》便一炮打响。他研究中国的曲艺艺术，拜姜昆为师并与丁广泉搭档，成为了家喻户晓的“洋笑星”。

《曲艺》杂志评价：“经过刻苦的学习和多年艺术实践，大山的语言水平和艺术表演技巧日臻成熟，获得曲艺界内行和广大观众的好评。”

相声之外大山也是各类文化节、国际交流节目以及大型晚会最抢手的双语主持人。在《随大山万里行》以及《旅游汉语》等教学节目中他一边教中国人学英语，一边教外国人学汉语。

他是登上央视春晚次数最多的外籍演员，但大山的事业也并不仅仅是在舞台上娱乐观众。台下他更多是积极发挥自己的优势为中西方架起文化交流的桥梁。从北京奥运会的“加拿大特使”，到温哥华冬奥会的“中国媒体代表团成员”，再到2010年上海世博会的“加拿大总代表”，大山逐渐发展成一位全方位的中外友好使者。

The Sound of Love choir was established in February 2019 in Winnipeg. Under the leadership of Madam Xiaohong Wang, the choir has been invited to perform for major events. This included 80 Wang Liping’s concert performances, hosted by the Global Chinese Choir Association and the North American Asian Performance Association, with a well-known conductor, Mr. Wanjun Qiao.

In February 2020, together with Impression Media, the Choir held the first Chinese Spring Festival Concert in Winnipeg. In October 2022, the choir collaborated with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for the first time.

The mandates of the choir are to provide learning and performance opportunities for those who enjoy singing, enrich the cultural and entertainment activities for the Chinese community, and share traditional Chinese culture.

温尼泊“爱之声”合唱团始建于2019年2月，团长是王晓红女士。本团的成立恰逢王立平先生作品全球八十场巡演——温尼泊站演唱会的全面启动。建团初期，“爱之声”合唱团由女子合唱团和儿童合唱团两部分组成。面向加拿大曼尼托巴省省府温尼伯市所有华人女性和华人儿童公开招募。经面试录取了有一定乐理知识及演唱经验的30余名女子合唱团团员，和20名童声合唱团团员。合唱团由具有专业音乐知识的老师担纲进行音乐指导与教学

The Red Crowned Crane Band comprises 11 talented musicians who play traditional Chinese musical instruments. Their Instruments include the erhu, gong, guzheng, flute, and pipa. Founded in 2017, the ensemble has performed locally at various cultural and musical events. The Red Crowned Crane strives to promote cultural exchange and awareness of Chinese culture.

Recognized as an emerging powerhouse, Angela Suet Kee Ng was a Grand Prize winner in the 2017 Canadian Music Competition. She performed at Carnegie Hall as part of the first prize winner ceremony for the American Protégé International Music Talent Competition.

Angela maintains a strong presence locally, notably winning seven trophies. She more recently won second prize at the Women’s Musical Club Scholarship Competition and represented Manitoba at the CFMTA National Piano Competition.

Angela is in her first year at the University of Toronto as the recipient of the Alice and Armen Matheson Entrance Scholarship, a full tuition scholarship awarded to top undergraduate applicants in piano performance.

Paul is an internationally trained educator who started his career in the First Nations Education system. He is currently a Vice-Principal with the Winnipeg Division and holds a Masters degree in Education. Paul is also a local performing artist. He represented Canada twice internationally in the 2017 Watercube Cup in Beijing and the 2015 World Championship of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. In 2012, he was part of Canada’s Got Talent and was selected as the Hometown Hero.

Paul believes in the power of performing arts to build community and spark social change. Paul engages youth, providing opportunities for them to share their gifts, hoping that this empowers them to pursue their talents. Since 2015, Paul has been hosting annual sold-out Concerts for a Cause, raining close to $100,000 for local charities, and he has launched an album. In 2019, Paul was the first local Filipino-Chinese artist to be accompanied by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts Inc. is an independent non-profit amateur cultural performance organization. Its membership consists of local Chinese immigrants, Chinese Canadian citizens, and student volunteers. They all share a common interest in the Chinese performing arts and are dedicated to community growth.

The organization was established to promote Chinese culture and arts across Canadian multicultural groups, enrich overseas Chinese cultural life, strengthen the Chinese ethnic identity and community, and contribute to the linkage between the mainland and overseas Chinese through performing arts. It further aims to promote culture and art exchanges with other ethnic groups, enhance friendly relations with those groups, and raise awareness of Chinese culture and arts in the Canadian multi-cultural context.

Manitoba Great Wall Performing Arts has established a Dance school, Manitoba Chinese Choir, and a Chinese instrument band. The Dance Group has received many awards at National and provincial competitions over the past 10 years.

Horizon is a vibrant, high-calibre community choir composed of talented people who love with choral singing! Led by director Johanna Hildebrand, Horizon strives to offer innovative, energetic choral performances that engage a contemporary audience.

Created in the summer of 2013, Horizon began as an extension of Prairie Voices, allowing older choristers to continue performing and hone their technique. Horizon carries on Prairie Voices’ world-renowned tradition of bringing style, energy, and passion to the stage.

Each year, Horizon presents a concert series that showcases a diverse repertoire and has been a regular guest of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the Winnipeg New Music Festival.

Johanna Hildebrand has enjoyed a life-long involvement in music of all styles and genres. She has Musical Arts and Education degrees from Canadian Mennonite University and the University of Manitoba. She now teaches music, choir and fiddling in the Seven Oaks School Division.

Johanna has performed and studied music since the age of two. Her musical interests have multiplied through the years, including various instruments and singing in numerous vocal and instrumental groups, most recently Renaissance Voices and the Canadian Chamber Choir.

Johanna’s choral experience includes working with singers of all ages through university, community, public and private schools. She has served as a guest conductor at various Manitoba choral days, including the Provincial Honour Choir. She recently served as the choral director of the Rainbow Harmony Project.

Twice winner of Juno Awards for Best Classical Composition, composer CHAN Ka Nin’s works have been performed by ensembles and artists from around the world. His international awards include Béla Bartók International Composers’ Competition, Barlow International Competitions, International Horn Society Composition Contest, Jean Chalmers Award, PROCAN Young Composers’ Competition and Amherst Saxophone Quartet Composition Competition.

In 2001, his opera Iron Road, written with librettist Mark Brownell, won the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Musical. In 2002, his chamber work Par- çi, par-la, recorded by Ensemble Contemporain du Montréal, won a Juno Award. In 2017, Sinfonia Toronto’s commission of My Most Beautiful, Wonderful, Terrific, Amazing, Fantastic, Magnificent Homeland was recorded by the Toronto Symphony. In 2018, the project Dragon’s Tale was awarded the Kathleen McMorrow Award for contemporary classical music by Ontario composers.

His new work, Pikä Talvi, (long winter), was premiered by percussionist Antti Ohenoja and a string quartet in Helsinki in January 2022. In the same year, his Harp Concerto was premiered by Sinfonia Toronto with harpist Teresa Suen-Campbell.

Song of Everlasting Regret, Chang Hen Ge, translated as “Song of Everlasting Regret,” is a literary masterpiece from the Tang dynasty by the famous Chinese poet Bai Juyi (772–846). It retells the love story between Emperor Xuanzong and his favourite concubine Yang Yuhuan (719–756). This epic poem is dated from 809.

Xuanzong was the longest-ruling Emperor of the Tang Dynasty. He was very smart, talented, adept at calligraphy and described as a handsome man. He was a wise and impressive ruler at the start of his reign, and brought Tang China to its apex. The Chinese described his early rule as a “Glorious era” and marked the apex of classical Chinese poetry as well. However, in the latter half of his reign, he fell in love with Yang Yuhuan and gradually ignored administrative matters. A trusted military governor, An Lushan, would launch a rebellion that would kill up to 40 million people. The Rebellion forced Xuanzong to abdicate the throne to his son and become High Emperor with no real power. The rebellion devastated China and marked the decline of the Tang Empire.

Bai Juyi wrote his masterpiece about 50 years after the events, greatly embellishing the story and cementing its place as one of the greatest love tragedies in Chinese history. This musical score was composed in 2018 by Sun Chang, resident composer of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra, and was featured at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing in 2021. This is the first performance of the piece outside of China.
