Up Close and Orchestral is a program that makes a direct connection with high school students. Led by WSO Resident Conductor Julian Pellicano, students receive the rare and exciting opportunity to meet the WSO and experience an interactive ‘up close and personal’ orchestra performance in their school.
The Up Close and Orchestral program visits several high schools each year to share a full orchestra concert with more than 4,800 students. Read more about this program in the Winnipeg Free Press.
Provincial Student Soloist Competition
WSO is pleased to announce cellist Juliana Moroz as winner of the 2018 Provincial Student Soloist Competition and UCO soloist for 2018. Congratulations Juliana and thank you to all the applicants and finalists for your hard work and preparation.
Biography: Juliana Moroz
Born into a musical family, Juliana Moroz began playing the cello at the age of three. After winning the Aikins Memorial Trophy in spring 2017 (the top prize for instrumentalists at the Winnipeg Music Festival), she gave a highly acclaimed performance of Popper’s Hungarian Rhapsody with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. A consistent prizewinner in local and provincial music festivals, she has attended the Aspen Summer Festival, Morningside Music Bridge Program, Orford Arts Festival and Rosamunde Summer Festival. Juliana started her cello studies with Andrea Bell and is presently a student of Yuri Hooker. She has participated in masterclasses with Richard Aaron, Colin Carr, Desmond Hoebig, Hans Jensen, John Kadz, Brian Manker, and Johanne Perron. She also enjoys performing chamber music, especially with her family as the JAGD quartet, and is Principal cello of the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra.
In fall 2017, Juliana won the Winnipeg Youth Orchestra Scholarship competition and performed the complete Shostakovich Cello Concerto with the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra in February 2018.
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra invites students in Manitoba aged 14 to 18 to submit an application and recording for the annual Provincial Student Soloist Competition. This competition alternates annually between strings (including harp & guitar) and brass, woodwind & percussion. Due to limitations of the UCO tour, pianists are not eligible to compete. This competition will provide an opportunity to showcase a talented young musician in concert with the WSO during the Up Close and Orchestral program each year.
The 2018 competition is closed. The 2019 competition will be announced in December, 2018 and will be for woodwind, brass & percussion students.
- Any Manitoba woodwind, brass & percussion student from the age of 14 to 18.
- This competition is not open to voice or piano students.
- Please note that the 2020 competition will be open to string students. The competition alternates annually between strings and woodwind/brass/percussion.
Auditions will be held in two rounds. The preliminary round will be determined by submitted recordings.
The final round of auditions is a live audition in front of a jury.
Available December, 2018.
