The WSO has the extraordinary opportunity to perform on a world stage and you can help to make this happen.
May 4, 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of World War II by Canadian Forces. Several Winnipeg and Manitoba based units served in the Netherlands including Lord Strathcona’s Horse, 12th Manitoba Dragoons, The Fort Garry Horse, Royal Winnipeg Rifles, The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, and 402(City of Winnipeg) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Today, Canada is fondly remembered by the Dutch for ending their occupation and oppression during the war.
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra is invited to the Netherlands to perform in a historic tour to commemorate
this important milestone anniversary. Your support of one or more of our musicians will help make this tour a reality. By adopting a musician you will help give the WSO the opportunity to embark on their first ever European tour, while also celebrating this important event in world history, an event that stands out as a defining moment for all Canadians. The WSO May 2020 Tour will take place in some of the Netherland’s most iconic halls. From the Musis Sacrem in Arnhem, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the de Doelen in Rotterdam, the Oosterpoort in Groningen, the de Singel in Antwerp, Parkstad Theatre in Heerlen, to the Tivoli in Utrecht, this tour will also be a defining moment for the WSO. The WSO will perform celebrated works on the tour by Beethoven, Symphony no. 5 and Berlioz, Messe Solennelle, along with a piece composed especially for the tour by well-known Canadian composer Matthew Whittall.
