Canadian Naomi Woo is a versatile conductor, pianist and researcher who joined the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in September 2019. Especially at ease with operatic repertoire, she has conducted opera in the US, the UK and Canada, and in 2019/20, will lead the WSO in Gershwin’s Crazy for You and conduct Jake Heggie’s Three Decembers with the Little Opera Company. Outside of conducting, she has an active career as a pianist, spanning vocal coaching, collaborative piano and solo performance. She has performed as a soloist with orchestras in Canada, the US and the UK, and been reviewed as an “elegant” performer in the New York Times for her performance at Carnegie Hall.
Naomi frequently collaborates with artists, choreographers, poets and composers in the creation of interdisciplinary performance work, which has shown at venues including Somerset House, Kunsthalle Darmstadt and Kettles Yard. An active educator, she is the Music Director of Sistema Winnipeg. She has also given masterclasses and taught courses at Cambridge University and the Vancouver Academy of Music, and is Music Director of the University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra. Naomi studied mathematics, philosophy and music at Yale before completing a PhD at Cambridge University.
