Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto

Due to the public health concerns surrounding COVID-19 and the province of Manitoba’s announcement encouraging the cancellation or postponing large-scale events with more than 250 attendees, the WSO has cancelled all performances until March 31, 2020. Tchaikovsky’s elegant and romantic Violin Concerto is so beloved, we often forget it was first considered unplayable. but today’s leading violinists master yesterday’s most fiendish difficulties and have made it an evergreen staple to music lovers. We go one further in our concert as soloist Vadim Gluzman will perform on the very Stradivari violin which Tchaikovsky had in mind when writing the work.

In his Sixth Symphony, Shostakovich brilliantly expresses the contradictions of his troubled Soviet world. In the words of one writer: ‘If you want light music, you’re going to get it – and with vengeance’.

This concert will feature EnCue technology during Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6.
