Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances

Symphonic Dances was Sergei Rachmaninoff’s last work and he summoned every bit of his vast resources in this vivid orchestral showpiece. WSO Composer-in-Residence Harry Stafylakis’ Into Oblivion is his second collaboration with the outstanding Canadian bass-baritone Phillippe Sly. The text comes from The Ship of Death by D.H. Lawrence.

  • Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances was the last piece the composer ever wrote. He was one of the greatest pianists of his time and didn’t “get” new music of his era. He preferred to stick to the more romantic traditions.
  • Our Composer-in-Residence Harry Stafylakis wrote Into Oblivion, basing the text off of D.H. Lawrence’s The Ship of Death. This is its world premiere and Harry’s second collaboration with bass-baritone Philippe Sly.
