Li Keur, Riel’s Heart of the North

Li Keur, Riel’s Heart of the North, a new music theatre work written by Métis poet/librettist Suzanne Steele (Gaudry/Fayant) and Winnipeg composer Neil Weisensel, is in five languages (Cree-Michif, French-Michif, Saulteaux, French and English). Li Keur, based on archival research, reimagines Louis Riel’s “missing” years (1870–72) and his love for the “heart of the north” – the land, his people, his nation and a previously unknown woman. With five vocal soloists, a narrator, Michif choirs, fiddler, dancers and symphony orchestra, this new work is a cross-cultural collaboration written in the spirit of truth and reconciliation and heralds the Métis renaissance of the 21st century.
