In the beginning of the 20th century, salon orchestras became phenomenally popular through Europe. The silken and velvet draperies of the salon further enhanced their intimate orchestras, whose music was so easy on the ear that a new, exotic musical culture arose around them.
Winnipeg had one too, if you remember the old Royal Alexandra Hotel, and its salon-master Irvin Plumm whose music made special occasions even more special.
Postcards from the 1900s recalls the era of the salon, with luxurious music guaranteed to lift the spirits.
WSO principal bass Meredith Johnson will be our special soloist, providing the rare opportunity to hear a concerto for double bass by the 18th century Czech-born composer Johann Vaňhal.
Plus WSO Music Director Daniel Raiskin, also an accomplished instrumentalist, puts down his baton to join the orchestra and perform a work by Johann Stauss Jr on viola!
