  • The Viennese waltz originated in the countryside of Austria, but was promptly banned when it first appeared in aristocratic society. It did not conform to their strict rules of decorum. It was not proper for a man to place his hands on the woman’s waist – and for couples to dance in very close hold – or to look deeply into each other’s eyes on the dance floor. This is why the dance is now performed in waltz hold, with the man and woman looking in different directions.
  • It is said that the Viennese waltz is so satisfying to dance to because its 3/4 time signature simulates the beat of the human heart. The “ONE” of the waltz’s ONE-two-three, ONE-two-three occurs at approximately the same frequency that the heart takes a beat.
  • A very young Alfred Hitchcock directed Waltzes From Vienna, a 1934 movie about the Viennese waltz and Johann Strauss senior and junior.
